Heat Stress

Nobody wakes up thinking they'll experience heat stress on the job site, but it can sneak up fast — and the consequences can be serious if it's missed. Knowing the warning signs of a heat-related incident can make all the difference in protecting your team.

Here are three key signs to watch for:

1. Changes in Skin Appearance
If you notice someone with a rash, red blisters, pale or clammy skin, or they’ve stopped sweating altogether, these are immediate red flags. Our bodies naturally cool down through sweating, so when that stops or when the skin looks off, it’s a sign the body is struggling.

2. Muscle Cramps and Abdominal Pain
Another early sign of heat stress is painful muscle cramps, especially in the legs, arms, or abdomen. These cramps are the body's way of saying it's overheating and losing too much salt and moisture.

3. Loss of Motor Skills and Headache
If someone appears uncoordinated, confused, or is complaining of a headache, it’s time to act. A reduction in motor skills can quickly lead to falls or other injuries, and headaches often signal dehydration or overheating.

Heat stress is a serious workplace hazard, especially in construction, industrial, and outdoor environments. By recognizing these signs early, you can take action before a medical emergency develops.

Stay proactive, stay hydrated, and always keep an eye on each other when temperatures rise.
